Santa brung some Snowshoes fer me to use at the Yonderosa but I've been making good use of em around here. Winter arrived a bit late but has more than made up for it in a very short time.

This Rainbow arched the sky while I was taking pictures of the Deer. The camera didn't pick up its vibrance unfortunately.

The trails littered with Birch leaves. The Larch is not quite peak color yet though a large number of needles that found there way between back and my pack whilst I was roaming around the woods.

What happened to Summer part 2

I caught a glimpse of movement from the Cabin's window and bedded down within rock throwing distance was a pair of Whitetail Does.

They stayed put for most of the rain squall then decided to browse their way up the hill after it had passed. Mostly I saw them feeding on Snowberry, both the leaves and the berries. I later found them napping again just yards from where I took these pictures.

What happened to Summer?

In this part of the world summer came late and left early. October is typically a gorgeous, resplendent with autumn golds and reds, deep blue skies and clear rain washed vistas. This year it was true again.

My mountain bike saw daily use exploring the local logging roads and trails when I could find them. The local Critters didn't quite know what to think and would often allow me to get quite close before deciding to skedaddle. I didn't even need to get off my bike to take this Doe's picture.

Saw LOTS of Deer, almost all Whitetail Does and a couple of fawns. I discovered a new 'rub line' and another was renewed by the local Bucks. I reckon in a few weeks they'll be getting all stupid once the rut kicks in.

Kinnikinnick appears to be a main staple for many of the locals, Bears, Grouse, Chipmunks and I even saw it in some Coyote scat...

Surprisingly this has been a pretty good year for both Deer and Grouse at the Yonderosa. Spring and a late arriving Summer don't generally favor the 'babes in the woods' but I'm seeing bunches of both. LOTS of berries too. The Bears are fattening up nicely. Grouse crops I've seen are filled with Kinnikinik berries, ants, leafs and needles in their crops.

Spruce Budworm - The most destructive and widely distributed forest defoliator in the Western USA... and the Yonderosa. Douglas fir is the preferred host but they were present on Larch, Ponderosa Pine, and Engleman Spruce too. I saw Pine Siskins feeding on them. I suspect the damage they do this year will be evident for years to come.

June escape

Though employment pressures abbreviated this much needed escape, we are very glad to have been able to escape to the Yonderosa for a few short days.

Things had definitely greened up since our last visit.

Amelanchier alnifolia

This was also our first trip of the year over the late(st) opening of the North Cascades Highway. The extra snow has all of the rivers flowing as high as I've ever seen. The locals say this is the worst flooding they've experienced since the mid 1990's.

Nature was putting on quite a show - flowers everywhere.

The weather was very mixed. Beautiful sunshine, heavy rain and hail, to gray overcast. The low temperature we saw was 38*F and the High was 76*F - very comfortable.

One needed to be very careful where he steps as there are many brand new babies in the forest. The deer were plentiful and it appears there is a good crop of fawns again.

Yonderosa Spring

The arrival of Spring at the Yonderosa is always welcome, especially when it is as late as it was this year. The first blooms, the bird songs and Bears announce the end of Winter.

Piper and I had some excitement on one of our morning walks when she caught wind of a Bear in the bushes. She alerted me and then hid behind me.. barking her support. The Bear didn't seem too interested in us, rather more interested in whatever it was eating. He was good size, looked healthy, especially for this time of year and I assume he because I saw no sign of cubs. I didn't manage to get any good pictures, the best being a muddy track... bummer.

There were plenty of Deer, both Mule and Whitetail. Lots of Moose sign too.

Piper wasn't sure what to think about all the big critters wandering around the yard.

Lots of wild strawberry blooms. Hopefully that means lots of strawberries!

The weather was mostly rainy. We had one night of frost. The surrounding peaks were dusted with snow. Kirby Creek was flowing higher than we've ever seen it. The cabin stayed nice and warm all night without using the heat. We ate well. Relaxed. Can't wait to get back!

April Visit

Sometimes it's nice to get away just for the sake of it.

Most of the snow is gone. The Grouse are drumming. Moose and Deer are moving about. No Bears yet. Found a recent kill, looked like a smallish doe, probably the Cat got her, but it is hard to tell as the Coyotes had the bones scattered by the time I found her.

November Visit

I'll use any excuse I can come up with to visit the Yonderosa - this last weekend I had a few of them. Nothing like combining a little business and pleasure.

It was just cold enough to turn the valley rain into snow. By first light the dusting of snow left a picturesque winter landscape for me to enjoy.

In addition to the beauty and the quiet the snow creates a registry of the local critters for me to discover. Deer, Coyote, Grouse, Snowshoe Hare and Douglas' Squirrel were the most common.

I was amazed by the amount of deer activity. About a half hour before dawn I watched a brute of a Whitetail Buck stroll through the meadow. I tried to get a picture but it was just too dark to capture him. Based on his presence and the quantity of deer tracks I believe the rut is still on.

Here is a GameCam picture taken by one of my neighbors a month earlier.

Inside the cabin stayed toasty warm. It took the Big Buddy Heater a little over 2 hours to heat the interior from 25*F to over 60*F. Once room temperature was achieved it was easily maintained with intermittent use of the low setting. Occasionally I would leave it off too long and the medium setting would bring it right back up to cozy warm. Use of the high setting would spike the temperature over 70*F which was uncomfortably warm for me. Shut down the cabin would loose 2-4 degrees per hour depending on the exterior temperature difference.

I was enjoying a walk in the meadow during a rain shower, I looked up and saw a rainbow and was not surprised to see it ended on a treasure.

July at the Outpost

The record June rains maintained the lush green. We arrived during the first warm spell of the year, the temperature reaching 92*F at the Outpost. The coldest night it dipped down to 40*F.

Our goal for the trip was to have some fun, relax and tie up some loose ends. The first few days we spent visiting local friends and seeing how their places were coming along.

A few odds and ends and some touch up and the exterior will be done!!!

I did my share of putting my feet up too.

The Mule and Whitetail Deer fawns are getting more ambulatory. Last month you had to watch where you step or risk tripping over them. The numbers of does with fawns seems to be down, perhaps it is due to the healthy Bear population we have. Good luck little dude.

Outpost Pictures

A vast majority of the inquiries I get through this blog are about the Outpost building. Most recently the requests have been for more pictures. I've posted these before but they have drifted too far back for some to see. Here's a collection of my favorites.

Deb was a big help during the construction of the Outpost. What she lacked in experience she more than made up for it with enthusiasm. She has also spurred this project into reality and greatly influenced its design specs.

The remote location and time limitations required simplicity and compromise in the design. It is big enough, but not too big.

In ten days we were able to dig the footing holes, do the concrete pad foundation, frame the building and install the roofing.

The following Spring we started on the siding.

I was able to salvage some of the soffit materials from my other projects off cuts. Not only does it look good (in my opinion) it is more critter resistant.

I build the cabinets from logs salvaged and milled by a local sawyer. Though small it is very functional.

The style was inspired by my Great Granfather's desk and evolved from there using the local materials I had found. It is a lot more work than buying stock cabinets but I was able to create custom sizes using solid wood and derive a great deal of satisfaction from it.

I used the same material to make the drawers. It mills and works beautifully.

To maximize comfort and conserve space I built a Murphy Bed.

My current project is interior trim. I'm resawing the material I'm getting from the sawyer and installing it rough side out bordered by the same material milled and stained dark. I make the backband from 1" rips that I rabbet and chamfer to add visual interest to the profile.

June 2010 visit

We're back from another very enjoyable extended weekend at the Yonderosa. The weather was perfect and the company good. As usual, time went by too quickly and it was difficult to leave.

On this trip I had some time and some of the materials to do some of the things I've been wanting to do.

I'm pleased with the way it is evolving. We find it very enjoyable to ponder the possibilities, experiment and then make it happen.

Rockin and Rolling

Spring in our steps

We are avid walkers and hikers. When Spring arrives we are eager to get out and enjoy the intense new green popping out everywhere, the critter activities and feel the warm return to the landscape.

There were Deer aplenty in this visit. Both Whitetail and Mule deer. We didn't see any with fawns though... Upon our arrival at the Yonderosa we had two Moose in the meadow. I believe they are the same two our neighbors snapped a picture off last year when they were calves. Gangly creatures but sure fun to watch.

Critter tax - a number of Lodgepole and Ponderosa Pine seedlings and saplings had their terminal buds browsed.

Red Birch is a favored browse for the Moose and Grouse.

Just Dreaming

Time for a long overdue update.

The weather for our May visit was mixed, but mostly good. A few showers punctuated some gorgeous sunny days and fresh snow topped the nearby peaks.

Not a lot of progress on the outpost, mainly it was a planning/dreaming visit and a bit of official business too. The Yonderosa affords us a number of options and opportunities. We are quite content in our little escape though there is the lure of a more permanent residence. We've always enjoyed contemplating and exploring our options.

There are a couple of sites we'd consider putting a residence/cottage. The pictures above show what the Morning view would be at one of them. The design I have in mind for this would orient the Living, Dining and Master bedroom to this view. The slope would accommodate a 'daylight basement' very well for some inexpensive square footage that a shop / tractor garage / man-world could be incorporated. The view and the access is best here.

I do enjoy escaping to the Yonderosa whenever I can, even a short visit is rewarding.

We are exploring the possibility of drilling a well this summer and interviewed a number of drillers while I was there. In these uncertain times spending a big chunk of $ does cause us to pause. It is an investment and a positive step, it isn't likely to be less expensive if we wait...

The baseboard is a full 6" of rough sawn Douglas fir. The wainscot is 5/16"+ random width rough sawn Douglas fir and just under 6' high. We're undecided on what we will do about the chair/plate rail - it's all part of the fun journey.

I did get a little snow while I was there. Kirby Creek is running and the first signs of Spring are starting to appear.

Long overdue update

Sometimes life's pace challenges my ability to keep up. I've been plenty busy, unfortunately not with my favorite endeavor, the Yonderosa.

My Grandmother is doing as well as can be expected. She has not been able to return home but her ability to recover can never be underestimated. She has exceeded my expectations and seems determined to improve, working hard on everything from physical therapy to eating.

On another unrelated note, Spring is wakening here at our residence. The leaves are breaking, the Indian Plum has bloomed and the Red Flowing Currant is putting on a spectacular display. My favorite sign of Spring is the Whales. We have resident Orca and Gray Whales but every year about this time the migratory Gray Whales show up in mass. We had at least five down at our beach yesterday. I tried to get some pictures as they come close into shore while feeding on shrimp. Magnificent creatures.

An Amazing Woman

This post may seem a little off topic but in reality it is a foundational part of the dream and actualization of the Yonderosa. Please pardon the mixed up rambling.

My heroes are my Grandparents and I was blessed to have all four well into my adult life. I'm going to share one of them with you in this post.

My Grandmother was born into a hard working family in the southern United States with roots back to the American Revolution. Her father was a successful businessman and pillar of his community. Her Grandfather (mother's side) fought in the Civil War. He was wounded in several battles and ended the War as a POW. He survived the long walk home across several states once he was released - a harrowing ordeal that isn't commonly reported in the history books. He later became a Doctor. Both of these men she greatly admired and loved. As a girl she rode a horse to school. They lived in town but had a large lot where they raised chickens and grew a garden. The home was nice by the standards of the day and her father would walk home for "Dinner" (the main meal - mid day) with his family.

In her mid teens she met my Grandfather and they married when she was 18. They literally lived "dirt floor poor" but they were both industrious and quickly improved their situation as they earned better jobs. My Grandfather had brothers working in the Pacific Northwest and encouraged them to move. Seeking a better life they borrowed some money, packed up the few belongs they had a set out to start a new life away from their families right in the middle of the Great Depression. My grandfather quickly found employment and his with ability and leadership skills advanced rapidly. By the time World War II came to America he was not allowed to enlist or be drafted because of the importance of his job to the war effort.

My Grandmother worked as "Rosie the Riveter" during and after the war. Her petite size allowed her to access areas in the tail sections which made her valuable to the Boeing company even after enough men returned to fill the positions.

The family continued to prosper in the years following which allowed them to buy a nice home on a large property that they raised two kids, had horses, a big garden and created a beautiful yard. They even built a swimming pool that years later I learned to swim in. The area wasn't so crowded then and they both enjoyed the many nearby outdoor opportunities this area is (was) blessed with.

The 747 project took them north and they found another home where they once again built an amazing garden and yard. With her kids grown and out of the nest she had more time to pursue other interests - like motorcycles... How many kids can say that they rode around on the back of their Grandmother's motorcycle? Not many now and a lot fewer then. Later she would be the first person in our family to buy a computer...

Our stays with them were always filled with adventures - road trips, fishing, camping, gardening, auto mechanics, woodworking, art, cooking.... were just a small sampling of the activities we were exposed to.

They had a Yonderosa of their own. 5 acres on a great Steelhead river. Steelhead fishing with a fly rod is high church to many anglers and they were enthusiastic members of that congregation. I was too young to fully appreciate it but the magic of the river, the mountains, the critters and the beauty imprinted deeply upon me.

Grandmas are well known for their cooking abilities and this Grandma was on another level. It didn't matter what it was, it was good. Everything from vegetables freshly picked garden to a plain white bread sandwich would be a feast to remember. Even finicky eaters succumb to her culinary prowess. A place at her table - whether that was in the dining room, on the tailgate of a truck, on the beach or along a trail is a reward beyond compare. A Thanksgiving dinner with Grandma would test the limits of self control with the endless sampling of delectable delights.

I have been blessed with many sittings at those tables. Only in your Grandmother's eyes are you perpetually too skinny. A little over a decade ago we'd have dinner regularly together and up until recently at least monthly. Last month I enjoyed another fabulous meal and her company. Even north of ninety I marveled at her independent and vibrant spirit.

After my Grandfather died my Grandmother remained in her home for a few years. I lived nearby and was able to help out whenever she needed chores done. A dislocated hip and subsequent replacement prompted the home's sale a move back into town and closer to son and daughter. With the proceeds of her home's sale she loaned me the money to build my current home. That project has paid dividends many times over and made buying the Yonderosa possible - yet another connection to and legacy of her wonderful life.

For my entire life she has been a source of great support, encouragement and sage advice. Through her I can link back distant generations and history. She is inspirational though she would never say that about herself. There is so much more I could write about this amazing woman and could never articulate it well enough to give much more than a glimpse who she really is. I am proud to be her grandson.

This post allowed me to gather some of the thoughts swirling around in my mind. Earlier this week my Grandmother had a major stroke. If she survives it will mean the end of her living independently, something she fears more than anything else. It tears at my heart, not wanting to let go of her yet knowing that her spirit can not be contained in her broken body. Much of what I've written I've shared with her in the past yet I am filled with regret of not telling her more. I hope to get another chance. It is times like these I realize how blessed I have been and regret taking even a single second for granted. For fifty years she's been a big part of my life, a constant and seemingly unstoppable. Accepting this new reality is difficult. We've put it in God's hands. Thanks for the prayers, support and a chance to brag about my Grandma.

Our neighbors emailed me a picture they took last weekend. We've had a spell of warm weather and much of the snow is gone. Great to get a peek but is sure makes me want to get back.

Looking Back at 2009

2009 sure didn't seem to like a whole year to me... It went by way too fast. 2009 was a good year though, progress was made at the Yonderosa, comfort and convenience improved, adventures were enjoyed. Each visit was eagerly anticipated and our enthusiasm remains high. When we aren't there, we're thinking about there.

Our first visit in 2009 was in February. The snow as knee deep. The landscape was peaceful and the quiet amazing.

I was back in early April to put down the porch deck, pickup and deliver windows, siding and soffit materials.

In May the siding got underway.

A Moose visit was a highlight in June

In July the focus switched to the interior. We added a window, insulated, back sheeted (to serve as the nailing substrate for the interior wall finish - Rough Sawn Fir - a goal for 2010) and soffited the porch.

The Place is really starting to come together.

A few days after our July visit our excellent neighbors informed us of a fire caused by a lightning strike right next to our cabin! We are very thankful to have observant neighbors watching out for us. The fire was contained and extinguished. Too close for comfort.

In August we insulated and sheathed the floor.

In September we were back with the Murphy Bed and another load of cabinets I built in my shop at home.

Later in the month I made a solo trip over to do the flooring.

A brief visit in October allowed us to haul over more cabinets and a sofa.

We also had a Bobcat stroll by while I was eating my breakfast.

I rarely see him but he leaves us lots of evidence he prowls the Yonderosa regularly - several Turkey kills this year and I just found another deer killed just on the other side of the creek - near where three others were killed by cats last year. I had assumed it was a Cougar as they are abundant in the area and Deer are their primary prey. Once I saw size of this guy - easily as big as my Labradors - I wasn't so sure. I spoke with a State Biologist and he said that large Bobcats will indeed take Deer.

I'm not certain he killed this most recent deer - a Mule Deer doe - I saw her tracks in the snow where she walked to the kill site and LOTS of coyote tracks. I looked hard but didn't find any definitive cat tracks but my theory is that the deer was killed by a cat, the pack of Coyotes waited until the cat was finished or was driven off of the kill. There were lots of areas of flattened snow near the kill that weren't used for feeding and my assumption is that the Coyotes waited for the Cat (Couger or Bobcat) to leave or drove it off once enough of them had arrived. Once the Coyotes took possession they ripped her into pieces (Cats feed with the carcass intact) and consumed her. It was facinating in a CSI kind of way. My curiosity piqued, I spent a few hours looking at tracks and the remains trying to discover what had happend. It was sad and exhilerating at the same time.

Back to our regulary scheduled programing.

A short trip in November allowed me to get another cabinet over. Still have three more to build for the kitchen, but it is useable now which made our December trip very comfortable

In December we enjoyed the fruits of our labor - staying warm, eating well and fueling the excitement for further progresss. 2009 was an excellent year for us. We are optimistic that in 2010 our efforts will yield more rewards and happy memories at the Yonderosa.

Cozy Inside

Whatever cosmic alignment had been preventing us from visiting the Yonderosa finally relented. We snuck over for a relaxing weekend on bare and dry pavement and escaped before the big scary storm due to arrive hours after we left.

I fired the heater and before long it was nice and toasty inside. What better way to spend a relaxing weekend than inside a cozy cabin with someone you love? The quiet, the beauty... amazing.

I have a LOT to be thankful for and I feel very blessed. I was born in a land that dreams can and do come true. The Yonderosa is some of the best evidence of that. My lovely wife and I have dreamed of this place for decades. We knew if we saved, educated ourselves and looked hard we would eventually find it. All of that work makes it even more special to us now that we've found it. There are many more chapters yet to be written and we go enthusiastically forward with much optimism. We hope that by sharing our experience it will inspire and energize you to follow your dreams.

The long road trip to the Yonderosa is eased by the scenery. This route isn't open year round, but when it is...

We figure we add an hour to each trip enjoying the scenery. It would be a waste to rush. Even so, there is never enough time to enjoy it all.

The snow has dropped to road level between the two highest passes. Too many avalanches occur to keep the road open year round. There may not be many more crossings left before they shut it down this year.

This mountain range is aptly named the Cascades.

The weather was beautiful but cold - about 20 degrees below the normal average for this time of year. The cabin stayed nice and cozy warm with occasional use of the heater - about an hour every 4-6 hours is all it took, more made it too warm. It was a good trial run for our winter visits.

Another shot of the window trim. I'm pleased with the look (thanks to my lovely wife). I'm very excited to get the wall finish (probably rough sawn Douglas Fir) on. The plywood is simply backing for the finish wood and will be covered up (a frequently asked question).

My DHW insisted she needed a comfortable place to sit during the day and she bought a couch. I resisted (of course) but will admit that it is a pretty nice to relax on...

There will be shelving built above the built in dresser as well as another cabinet between it and the Murphy bed. To the left of the bed will be another base cabinet and wall cabinet.

Just back from the Yonderosa. BEAUTIFUL fall weather, got some stuff done, saw some critters...

I was eating breakfast looking out at the meadow when this dude strolled by... I took this picture from inside the cabin window. Tried to get one from the porch but he skedaddled before I could get out there. I've only seen a few Bobcats prior to this visit - this one was bigger than the others, easily as big as our Labradors.

Yonderosa Free Range Cattle

There is a long tradition of open range grazing in this area. The Yonderosa Meadow is frequently visited by the free range cattle. They do a pretty good job with the mowing and fertilizing ... The dogs are entertained by them too. Their scratching on the cabin is annoying... I get my revenge by ordering a steak.

The cowboys have their work cut out for them as local herd is widely scattered after a summer of grazing on thousands of fence-less acres. We enjoy watching them work. The horses are especially impressive and seem to know instinctively how to gather the beeves, no matter how willful and stubborn.

Quick Trip - floor down & window trim

My Disproportionately Hot Wife (DHW) sourced some Red Oak inexpensively and tasked me with installing it. Got er' dun!

I also installed the window trim. After a number of mock-ups (four) and stain tests (eight) we have a winner! My DHW gets the credit for style and color. I just build it. I think she has splendid taste.

We are very excited to get the wall finish on - it will be rough sawn fir but I'm still about 100 board feet short. It would be great to get it in this fall - the weather will be the deciding factor though. We've just had the first snow of the season down to 5,000 feet.

Cabinets and such

Most of the inquiries I get are about the interior of the cabin. I haven't posted much because it is still a work in progress and the finish line is a ways off yet. I do have a few photos of some of the elements that I will share that I hope will keep your interest piqued.

Drawer fronts
We did a number of experiments before finding a style that we both agreed on. Rather than slabs I glued up the rippings and off cuts of the cabinet stock and framed it with a simple beveled backband. The goal was a rustic appearance - defects with mismatched contrast, not overly refined with a robust feel.

Here is another shot of the Cabelas' (love that place) hardware. They didn't have enough of a single style so we have a mix of Bear, Wolf and Deer tracks.

This is a shot of the unfinished interior window trim. Simple but labor intensive - milling, sizing and shaping. Eleven pieces for each window from raw quarter sawn Whidbey Island Douglas Fir 1x stock I purchased from the local sawyer. You'll have to pardon the alignment as it is only gravity holding it in position for the picture.

We were both inspired by this picture in Rachel Carley's book Cabin Fever and our window trim and door casing will be stained similar to this. Deb was adamant about NOT having any drywall and an all wood structure can be visually overwhelming. Our wall finish will be rough sawn fir vertical to a wainscot on the west wall and floor to vault on the south wall. The rest of the walls will be mainly covered by the cabinets, Murphy bed and other trims. The ceiling will be T&G pine though the orientation has yet to be agreed upon - translated means I'll do what she wants me to do once we get there, in the mean time I have to pretend I still have a say... LOL :^)

Next on the agenda is flooring. The flooring I had planned to use has turned out to be a lot more expensive than I expected. We have been debating vinyl - practical, inexpensive... - but heart really isn't into it. So... I'm looking to source some hardwood. I found a good deal on some Hickory but they only have about half of what I need. I'm also considering the laminated floors...

Hopefully I can get this done before the end of the month. I want to get another load or three of cabinets, wall finish and trim delivered and installed before the weather turns. Good problem.

The wife of a good friend passed unexpectedly. She was quite a gal, all 96 pounds of her. In that tiny body was one of the biggest spirits I have known - unique, vibrant and strong. She recently battled cancer but the fight took its toll and left her body too frail to contain that amazing spirit. I don't have a photo but conjuring up the happy image of her flyfishing in a dress, fishing vest accessorizing with a Super Blackhawk (it was in Bear country) holstered crossdraw at her side makes me smile - even with a heavy heart.

This blog's main focus is the destination, but the journey is pretty nice too...

This time of year the Elk Bulls gather up their harems. I stopped to get a few pictures of this band. I gave a few calls hoping to get him to come closer but all he did was stand up and bugle and chuckle back - he could see I was no threat to his girls and had none of my own that he could steal. A bit further down the road there was an even bigger herd bull with a harem of about the same size. He was a lot more agitated so we didn't stick around and let him go about his business. Just another part of why September is my favorite time of year.

Last month there was a 10,000 acre fire that burned right up to and across the Highway. The firefighters did a good job saving structures, orchards and livestock. There were a number of spots east of Loup Loup that the fire was very evident and spectacular. Would have liked to had more time to stop for pictures.

Just back from our most recent visit. The weather was AMAZING - more Indian Summer than Fall. I didn't get as much done as I had hoped - hurt my back on the third day, major bummer.

I did get the screen door installed. Its the roll up type, bought it at Home Depot ( http://www.homedepot.com/Doors-Windows-Doors-Exterior-Doors-Screen-Doors/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xh8Zbaed/R-100656621/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053 ) and so far it has been Labrador and bug proof. Easy to install and looks good too.

One of the chores that has been neglected has been the underlayment for flooring, so I put that in before I get too many cabinets to work around. Next trip I plan to do the flooring.

We also hauled over and installed the Murphy Bed, I like that a lot too. I built it using the Create-a-bed hardware and it works as advertised. The directions are good and the construction very simple. Might try to jazz it up more if I had it to do over - the rush to get it over there before the weather changes limited the time I had to do it and of course, it was a top priority on the HDL. ;^)

Cabelas had some outdoorsy cabinet hardware. This one has wolf tracks but the picture doesn't do it justice.

Had to replace a post that had warped on the front porch. It went smoothly despite having to pull up some decking and framing hardware. I've found that any lumber that isn't dry enough or firmly anchored in multiple directions will twist-warp-distort into some pretty amazing shapes in relatively short spans. Fasten it securely or bundle it tight or end up with a bunch of wood better suited to build Viking ships.

I'll post more about this trip later. Can't wait to get back!

Keeping the Boss Happy

Building in a remote location has many challenges. Clearly defined priorities and a logistical way to make it happen keep things on track... This "goes out the window" when trumped by the dreaded "Honey Do List" (HDL). Even though it is a "recreational" property I have discovered I am still within the jurisdiction of the HDL. Despite my protests the HDL is the priority no matter what I think... Even after nearly 30 years together I didn't see that one coming... Dooh!

What is on the HDL? You know she's serious when she hands you a manila envelope that says "TOP PRIORITY" and there is a tape that self-destructs after I listen to it. Then it is up to me to figure out how can I get done in this amount of time? What will I need? Where will I get it? How do I get it there? How much can a take with me on this trip? This might be an angle to get a new (bigger) truck ... Hmmm.

I had hoped to have the exterior completely finished by now but it doesn't appear I'll have the opportunity to make much more of a dent on our next trip either. Probably get the Horizontal siding done to the top band, but shingling the gable ends is out. The post wraps and soffit trim? Nope. Finish the rail and build the stairs? Sorry...

It's a "good problem" and I will comply willingly with one stipulation -Caveman code clearly states I have to come up with some way to go fishing and leave at least one item on the honey-do list un-done. Any ideas? ;^)

A year ago this month our permit was approved and we began building. Our plan was to finish the floor so we'd be out of the ground come Spring 2009. It doesn't seem that long ago... time does fly, especially when you're having fun.

We've come a fair piece since then. Still plenty more to do. I was hoping to be 100% with the exterior by now but the boss decided the interior needed some upgrading to make it more useful. Every month we get a little more done. Every visit is that much more enjoyable.

We managed to escape and enjoy a weekend at the Yonderosa. Not a lot to report other than nice weather and relaxation. Here are a few pictures of some of the highlights.

Fire Pictures

On July 27th a lightning struck trees near the cabin, smoldered overnight and blew into flame the next day. The first four pictures were sent by neighbor DP and the last by neighbor ST.

Got word that there was a fire up our way, perhaps even on our place. YIKES!

"Two trees were struck by lightning and smoldered all night. In the morning when things dried out a bit and it got warmer, it took off. A couple who live miles away on a hill saw smoke, called me and asked me to check it out. They have a great view of the valley and are responsable for spotting quite a number of fires. It was a small fire, but had the potential to take out quite a bit of property. As it was, the fire came to within about 50 feet of the cabin."

Another neighbor said he'd drive up and take a look.

We just got back from our July visit - 9 wonderful days. We did get some work done. I'll share a few pictures of my helpers and post more when I get them uploaded.

Across the Meadow - July 2008

It was a year ago this month we submitted our plans for the building permit. The county was helpful, guiding us through the hoops and taking our money. They approved the permit quickly and it wasn't long after that we started construction.

Thus far the experience has been a good one. Our structure is weather-tight and greatly improves the comfort and usefulness of the property. There is still plenty yet to accomplish and it is our hope that this month we'll make more progress.

July is a good month for wildflowers and berries. It was the month last year that the Cougar showed up and began thinning out the herd - killing at least three Deer on the property. The grass was still mostly green and the weather warm. The local free range cattle should start showing up too - they can be a nuisance but do a good job with the mowing and fertilizing.

Anytime at the Yonderosa is a blessing, even a short visit. We arrived Friday night and we were greeted by a thunderstorm complete with HEAVY rain, and lightning strikes all around us. It delayed our unpacking but the show was quite spectacular from the shelter of the porch.

The nearby State Land is being logged. The Forester I spoke with said they are almost giving the logs away. Because of mill closures these logs had to be hauled to mill over 3 hours away.

Over Memorial day weekend a visitor left a campfire burning that ignited several spots on the 20 acre parcel NEXT to us! WAY too close for comfort!

The wild strawberries were just starting to get ripe. Pea sized but SWEET!

The Temperatures reached the mid to upper 80's so Kirby found a way to stay cool.

Finally photographic evidence that Bigfoot exists. See him up there on the mountainside right next to the tree?

Of Moose and Men

Just got back from the Yonderosa. As usual, too tired to post much now but want to share a few teasers to get you to come back for another visit.

So there we are sitting on the porch, enjoying a glass of wine, talking about how good life is when "Hello there.... we have a Moose." says my lovely wife.

I grab the camera I have at the ready for just such an occasion - I really wish I had Mona level skills for this encounter - and I fire off a shot through the rail hoping to capture a picture of the Moose.

The Moose was good enough to stand there for a while and allow me a few more shots. Had I been less bumbling and more patient he might have ambled right up to the cabin for a proper portrait...

Our neighbors thought he bore a striking resemblance to another moose they knew named Gus and perhaps he was Gus Jr. Whoever he is we're glad "Guswinkle" visited the Yonderosa and posed for a few pictures.

Rustic Cabinets

We've been deciding... OK, SHE'S been deciding what cabinets to put into the mini-cabin for some time. After numerous prototypes, some campaigning and the availability of local stock we have a winner.

We wanted rustic and somewhat unique. I found some quarter-sawn Douglas Fir milled locally that has proven both visually interesting and easy to work with.

Jeff turns logs into dimensional stock with his Timber King. The quality is excellent and the price is right.

The doors are also solid stock. The styling was inspired by my Great Grandfather's desk - solid wood and simple. Rather than cut out the imperfections - Bark Beetle Pitch Pockets, wind checks, staining and knots - I did my best to incorporate them to add to the rustic look.

I'm not sure but I think this is a female Audabon's Warbler. She was not happy about my proximity to the nest she was building but was good enough to pose for a picture.

Just got back from six incredible days at the Yonderosa, way too much to tell so I'll try to save some words by using some pictures.

The primary reason for our trip was to make progress on our little building. We managed to get some siding on and took Happy Days' (thanks Deb) advice and tried earth tones. Yonderosa Green and Greener

The Soffit on the Eves and Gable Ends turned out great, still have the Porch Soffit to do.

Two more Windows! Besides a great view we watched Deer feeding in the meadow, a Coyote hunting down by the Kirby Creek and enjoyed a Sky full of Stars though them. Sitting behind them enjoying a wonderful meal and a glass of wine is more proof, Life IS Good.

There were distractions... While the Turkeys were not in the mood to play the Trout were eager to maul my flies. You should have seen the one that got away...

The trailer worked great. Over 600 miles of shuttling tools and materials - zero problems.

Weather - Always adding spice to experience. We had Sun, Rain, Snow, Wind and Frost, sometimes in the same day. It was nice to have a cozy place to retreat to and actually enjoy the variety.

Ready, Get Set, GO!

My truck is excellent for shuttling materials and supplies to the Yonderosa but is less comfortable for our two puppers on our long drive there and back - they much prefer the Subaru. To make life better for the "kids" we decided to invest in a trailer. The trailer will allow us to bring the items that can't be stowed inside a vehicle, like bulk propane, generator, etc. It will also allow us to haul our cabinets, appliances and even a Quad (not all at once) without having to use the truck.

The main reason for us choosing this trailer is that it folds up making storage very easy.

It just arrived but my initial impression is very favorable. The quality is among the best of the trailers we looked at. Folding and unfolding the trailer is easy. It has more than enough usable space for a majority of our needs.

The one downside, in my book anyway, is that it is made in China... The guy at Costco said it was made in Utah but the packaging made it very clear that it was in fact made overseas.

We will be using it on our next visit. I will report how it goes.

In an unrelated matter my wife and I have been debating the colors we will use on the Cabin. After a number of experiments we think we have come to an agreement. We will further test on our next visit. I am optimistic.

Three weeks ago there was still 10" of snow on the ground. Now that it has melted I was able to haul some more materials in and do a little work.

I picked up three of the windows I had ordered in a nearby town. I only had time to install the loft window. The next trip I'll get the big XOX window installed, the kitchen window, the soffits (T&G pine) and hopefully at least a good start on the siding. The siding will be 1x8 Spruce bevel on up to the soffit and Cedar Shingles on the gable ends.

The rail was installed for the inspection to meet safety code (railings required for decks 30" or higher). My plan it is to wrap the posts and re-install the rail as well as add the railing to the other side. The main entry will be centered from the front with a small landing and stairs. Plenty left to do but it felt good to make a small dent in the to-do list.

The abundant beauty and wildlife frequently distracted me. My point and shoot camera failed to capture many of the subjects of my curiosity and awe but there were a few interesting shots.

April Visit Update

A quick update. I managed to get over to the Yonderosa for six wonderful days! Even though I went solo I enjoyed my visit and accomplished a number of tasks including getting (and passing) the framing inspection, I managed to get the materials for the siding and soffit, installed one of the windows, chased some turkeys, saw lots of deer, a number of cool birds - Mountain Chickadee, Clark's Nutcracker, Goshawk, Yellow Bellied Sapsuckers (many), Ruffed Grouse (drumming)...., The lake was still frozen but 99.9999% of the snow was gone from the Yonderosa. The sound of the Kirby Creek was a pleasent backdrop to the chorus of bird songs. BIG Moose! WIDE variety of weather 80*F+ down into the teens, even had some snow fall... Discovered a Sub-Alpine Fir -Abies lasiocarpa - on the property... More later.

Winter intensifies the quiet and solitude

The cabin came about in part because of my love/hate relationship with the trailer. The advantages of the cabin - even unfinished - became more apparent during our visit. My current favorite feature of the cabin is the porch. It welcomes and shelters without excuding the scenery. Sitting on the porch, sipping a warm beverage is proof that LIFE IS GOOD! As a practical matter it's place to kick off the snow, it protects the entry and it (greatly) extends the living space -even in winter. We are more motivated than ever to get it done!

Winter Project - Cabinets

While Winter has halted construction on the cabin itself, we have been contemplating the cabinets and interior trim. We've agreed we want a rustic style but the details are not yet decided.

A visit to a local sawyer turned up some quarter-sawn Douglas Fir that intrigued me. As an experiment I made a few drawers, finding it easy it is to work with and visually interesting.

I'm not sure where this will end up, but it does keep "cabin fever" at bay.

"Work is only work when you'd rather be doing something else." Or so it is said.

To this point much of time at the property has been task driven - County/State forms and fees, meetings, construction, etc... Despite all of the official business we did manage to infuse the trips with many pleasurable moments. Overall it has been enlightening and enjoyable.

Shovel Ready

We had not planned to begin building until the Spring of 2009 but impatience, opportunity and enthusiasm propelled the project forward. We paid for the permit and began excavating for the Post & Pier foundation. Once the concrete piers were set the framing began - pressure treated posts anchored to infloor beams, joists hung in hangers and the floor sheathed - tangible progress.

Following the inspection our plan was to tarp off the floor for the winter and be that much further ahead next Spring. In October a gap in my employment and some use it or lose it vacation time offered us yet another chance to continue the progress. Predictably, our enthusiasm got the better of us.

I quickly made a materials list, estimated the construction time and sourced the materials. We were on the cusp of Winter - it would be better to leave it as it was than come up short of being "dried in."

Committed, but not without trepidation we loaded up all the gear, supplies and materials we could - the truck squated under the weight. We had an uneventful trip though we did encounter snow at the higher elevations.

The next morning we were underway. The simple design sped the progress. My wife, despite her lack of construction experience proved to be an excellent helper allowing me to focus on layout, cutting and assembly.

The weather cooperated - the night time temperature would drop into the teens and the days were sunny. We made steady progress each day and stayed on schedule. I had hoped to get a little ahead but a few material omissions required a trip to a nearby down to source materials.

After a week of dedicated labor the cabin was dried in. It took us a total 10 days of labor to get from digging the foundation holes to installing the door knob. Fortune smiled on us - it went as well as we could reasonably expect.

There is still plenty to do. Windows, soffits, siding, window wraps, trim, decking and rail on the exterior. My goal is to accomplish that by this summer.

I've built dozens of houses and been involved in hundreds of other construction projects as a designer or a carpenter - the experience of building this simple little structure has been one of the most enjoyable and satisfying of my life. The environment, the challenge, the partnership with my wife, the accomplishment of a dream... all greatly enrich the experience.

A Room With A View

We knew one day we would build a cabin on this property. The shortcomings of the travel trailer motivated us to spur this dream into action sooner than we anticipated.

Time was our biggest limitation. Consideration had to be given to travel, the logistics of getting materials, acquiring permits and getting inspections. Being remote the need to utilize commonly available, standard sized materials that could be easily shuttled to the site and handled would be a priority.

The climate also factored into the design. The Yonderosa is situated at 3500' - deep snow and -30 degree temperatures are possible. Summer temperatures can top 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

We didn't want to restrict future building and we wanted a view. With a number of viable sites the choice was not easy. We chose the south edge of the meadow with a good view of our favorite nearby mountain.

Results
-A simple straight gable roof design was chosen for ease of construction, practicality and cost effectiveness. The roof is steep enough to shed snow, and is easily vented which will help during the heat of summer.

-12' x 16' main floor efficiently utilizes materials and is of sufficient size for a variety of uses and configurations. A large view window invites the natural beauty inside.

-8'x 12' Covered Porch will extend the living space and enjoyment of the structure - providing shade and weather coverage.

-The 12' x 12' loft will provide storage space for gear and supplies without cluttering the main living area. A north facing window will add light and cross ventilation.

I drafted and submitted the plans in July and they were approved within the week!

The Next Step

To make our visits more convenient and comfortable we decided to purchase a travel trailer. I was not initially happy with the purchase though I changed my mind once we started using it. Sleeping was more comfortable, cooking more convenient, and the wife happier...

Longer stays are easier with the trailer. One could stay 'home' while the other fetched supplies or went fishing. It is also easier to entertain guests. The small size of the trailer meant the eating quarters doubled as sleeping quarters - the conversion became ritual each morning before breakfast and in the evening prior to lights out.

The penalty for convenience and comfort is that the surroundings are veiled. That sensory deprivation sparked a desire to find a compromise - a remedy that balances comfort without being insulated by our surroundings... Yet another dream germinates in the fertile soils of this land.

Hallelujah, again.

We closed on OUR property in May of 2008.

We had our finances in order so it was an easy transaction. There were some bureaucratic hoops to jump through and the fees that go along with them... The county was helpful and we had our paperwork in order and approved by August.

The "Forest Management Plan" was an enjoyable exercise. It is required for the Forestry tax classification and is congruent with our planned use of the property. I will detail elements of the plan in subsequent blog entries.

Life is good.

The Search

It has long been a dream of ours to own acreage in Eastern Washington. We had opportunities in the past but for one reason or another never acted on it. A few years ago we began a dedicated search for the "Yonderosa." After looking at hundreds of properties we knew within minutes of stepping on this property that we had found it.

We were immediately struck by the beauty of this place. It was within a distance we were willing to drive. The road access is excellent. There are numerous recreation opportunities nearby. It is in an area of good wells and excellent soils. It has TREES! Many excellent trees. It has an excellent view and pleasing topography. It is excellent habitat for a wide variety of critters. It has many possibilities and potential. We can afford it.

We began calling it our property, comparing it to what we had seen. Nothing else came close. After some additional research we made an offer and it was accepted. Everything came together as if it was scripted. We feel very blessed.
